The Blue World Marine Adventure’s Garden Island Ship Graveyard Tour takes you out to one of the most accessible ship graveyards in the Great Lakes, were you get the opportunity to float over 19th century wrecks of sailing ships and steamships from a by-gone era in clear-hull kayaks, for a unique view of this historical site, while learning the history and importance of these early workhorses of the lakes.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The position is that of a deckhand on the passenger tour boat serving the Blue World Marine Adventure Garden Island Ship Graveyard Tour, operating between Kingston and Garden Island in Lake Ontario.

In this position, you will be a deckhand on the company’s 24-foot long passenger transport boat, which will carry our guests from Portsmouth Olympic Harbour in Kingston out to our tour site at Garden Island. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of the guests on our tours, as well as the vessel and your fellow crew members.

You will follow the direction of the Captain while working on the tour boat and will report to the General Manager on all other issues.

The ability to clearly speak in both English. Fluency in French is considered an asset but not required.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist the Captain with the safe operation of the tour boat and ensure the safety of passengers and the vessel, in accordance with Transport Canada regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Assist the Captain with the maintenance of the tour boat, and the integrity of on-board safety equipment, including PFDs, fire-fighting equipment, communications equipment, and be fully versed in safety protocols that ensure the safety of passengers and crew, and the integrity of the boat.
  • Assist the tour guide with monitoring the safety of guests in the kayaks on the tour site and render assistance in an emergency.
  • Ensure PFDs are properly stored following each tour, the deck is clean, clear and dry, and ready for next group of guests.

LOCATION:

This position will be based out of Portsmouth Olympic Harbour Marina, located at 55 Yonge Street in Kingston, Ontario.

HOURS:

The operating season is from May 15th to September 31st (subject to conditions).

As the company will be operating 7 days a week through the entire spring/summer operating season, there are both full-time and part-time job positions available.

FULL-TIME positions are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

PART-TIME positions are Saturday to Sunday, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

NOTE: there will be opportunities through the season for employees to rotate between week and week-end shifts as availability dictates.

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Medical Emergency Duties (MED) A1 – Basic Safety Training (BST) – Transport Canada Certification.
  • Preference for candidate possessing Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Certificate, as required by Transport Canada.
  • Preferred minimum of two (2) years experience, in the role of Deckhand on a small passenger vessel.
