The Horticulture students are an integral part of our Summer Parks operations. This position provides beautification services to Township parks, entrance features, assets, gardens and community driven projects. Working with the Township Horticulturalist team, this role supports the preparing, planting, and maintenance of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. Using a variety of equipment and tools, the Horticulture student will gain valuable work experience in the field of horticulture. This position may also support the Parks team with maintenance services to Township properties, including Recreation Facilities, libraries, municipal offices, historic buildings and parks. The ideal candidate is enrolled in post-secondary education or a recent graduate of Horticulture or related program.

EDUCATION, SKILLS, TRAINING:

  • Enrolled in or a recent graduate of a full-time post-secondary education program in Horticulture or related field
  • Experience working in greenhouses, agriculture, or landscaping, considered an asset
  • Experience operating equipment and tools related to preparing, planting and maintaining of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs
  • Experience operating equipment such as a riding lawn mower, string trimmer, and other lawn maintenance tools would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of risks or hazards that may exist within an outdoor recreation space
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Motivated, demonstrate initiative, and ability to work independently with minimum direction
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions as required
  • Valid class “G2” driver’s license and a satisfactory driver’s record are required

Note: This position is subject to eligibility criteria adjustments in the event grant funding is secured.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Support the beautification services to Township parks, entrance features, assets, gardens and community driven projects
  • Support the preparing, planting, and maintenance of annuals, perennials, tress, and shrubs
  • Perform minor equipment maintenance
  • Complete maintenance services to Township properties, including the Recreation Centre, libraries, municipal offices, historic buildings and parks, as assigned
  • Perform weekly risk and hazard inspections of parks, sport fields and play spaces as assigned
  • Operate equipment related to lawn cutting, weed removal and garbage removal
  • Other duties associated with landscaping and maintaining Township parks/sports fields

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Frequent and regular outdoor work in various and changing weather conditions that include but is not limited to rain, hot and cool temperatures, and wind.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and additional hours beyond the normal working day.
  • May be operating equipment for long periods (3-4 hours) without a break
  • Frequent moderate physical exertion and occasional heavy physical exertion, including lifting, digging, shoveling, raking and climbing ladders
  • Work may include locations with exposure to sensory elements including waste materials and smells.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Daily communication with Township employees

External: Occasional interaction with Township residents, visitors, and contractors
