This position is located within the Engineering & Environment Division which provides services to various other Divisions across the Township. The statement of purpose for the Division is:
Support internal and external stakeholders in the design, construction, and rehabilitation of Township infrastructure. This is achieved by creating and interpreting policy, promoting engagement, safeguarding, and enhancing the environment, protecting Loyalist Township and its residents, utilizing taxpayer funds in a responsible and respectful manner, and through long term strategic planning.
With the Division focused on the following five core service areas:
- Project Management
- Engineering Development
- Technical Expertise
- Environmental Stewardship
- Long Term Infrastructure Planning
Reporting to the Engineering & Environment Manager, the Engineering student will be responsible for a variety of tasks to assist the Engineering and Environment Division. The successful candidate will work in both office and outdoor settings and must be able to work well independently and as part of a team.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- Currently enrolled in a postsecondary institution or a recent graduate in a related field, with preference given to applicants in Engineering or Engineering technology programs with a focus on Environmental, Water Resources, or Civil Engineering.
- Experience interpreting federal and provincial government Acts and Regulations
- Capable of performing light manual labour and work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions while wearing appropriate PPE (i.e. work boots, hard hat, safety vest);
- Valid Class G2 drivers license with a satisfactory driving record and access to reliable transportation.
- Applicants will be required to obtain and main a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check).
- An understanding of Storm Water Management facilities construction, operation, and maintenance would be considered an asset.
Note: This position is subject to eligibility criteria adjustments in the event grant funding is secured.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
- Strong research and analytical skills (e.g. ability to conduct rigorous research, summarize findings, and present recommendations).
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong ability to multi-task, with attention to detail.
- Ability to self-motivate and work alone or in a team environment.
- Understanding of the program development process and how to implement new initiatives, including planning, costing, implementation strategies, and building in feedback and evaluation techniques.
- General knowledge of Municipal Operations an asset.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Update sanitary sewer model to include new development.
- Update and develop stormwater models for existing piped systems.
- Research corporate and community sustainability initiatives which could be implemented in alignment with the Township’s Climate Action Plan.
- Assist with annual energy reporting for all Township facilities.
- Develop surveys and presentations used to interact with the public and gather feedback on various initiatives.
- Inspect, with appropriate supervision, capital projects which involve upgrading or maintaining Township infrastructure.
- Research and draft Engineering and Environment policies and by-laws.
- Complete a variety of tasks as assigned to assist the Engineering and Environment division as well as other divisions within Loyalist Township.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Daily communication with Township employees
External: Occasional interactions with Township residents and visitors
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Normal office-type environment (may be in office or other municipal buildings). May be seated for long periods (3-4 hours).
- Work may include locations with exposure to sensory elements including waste materials and smells.
