We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Utilities Compliance Student Intern to join our team. The intern will assist with data entry, data correction, data evaluation, and support various project delivery within the Township’s water and wastewater systems. This role is ideal for a student pursuing a degree in environmental science, chemical or civil engineering, or a related field, who is eager to gain hands-on experience in Utilities compliance. The successful incumbent will provide support to the Township’s water and wastewater compliance program and compliance projects. As assigned this position may support the Utilities Team with daily tasks and projects. Some general building and grounds keeping maintenance, such as grass cutting, weed trimming, painting, etc. will be required. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an Environmental or Civil Engineering or similar program.

EDUCATION SKILLS, TRAINING:

  • Enrolled or a recent graduate from an Environmental or Engineering Diploma program from an accredited college or university
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Interest in water and wastewater compliance and regulatory affairs
  • OIT certification in water/wastewater operations preferred.
  • Passport to Safety Certificate, considered an asset.
  • First Aid/CPR desirable.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Motivated, demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently with minimum direction.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint) of products, databases and analyzes tools
  • Experience operating a variety of small equipment and tools
  • A valid class “G2” driver’s license and a satisfactory driver’s record is required.

Note: This position is subject to eligibility criteria adjustments in the event grant funding is secured.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Data entry, data correction, evaluation and reporting of water and wastewater data:
  • Accurately enter and update compliance databases, ensuring all information is current and correct
  • Assist in collection, analysis, and interpretation of data to ensure adherence to regulatory standards
  • Reviewing, maintaining, organizing and updating water and wastewater documentation, ensuring all records and documents are easily accessible and up to date.
  • Project and training support: provide support in the planning, execution, and delivery of compliance-related projects and operator training
  • Research: conduct research of regulatory requirements and industry best practices to support compliance initiatives
  • Administrative office tasks including gathering, scanning and filing documents and records
  • Occasionally assist with grounds maintenance at multiple locations, general building maintenance and assisting operators and maintenance workers with various tasks

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Daily communication with Township employees

External: Occasional interaction with Township residents, contractors, and visitors

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The position is based in an office setting with standard office hours. The intern will work at a desk, using a computer and other office equipment.
  • May be seated for long periods (3-4 hours) with the ability to get up and move/stretch. May be required to do occasional moderate physical exertion.
  • Occasional outdoor work in various and changing weather conditions that include but is not limited to rain, hot and cool temperatures, and wind.
  • Ability to work with various start times to the normal office working day.
  • Occasional moderate physical exertion, including lifting, walking, prolonged standing,
  • Work may include locations with exposure to sensory elements including waste materials and smells.
