Key Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, facilitates planning, implementation and evaluation of goal-oriented therapeutic recreation programs for clients
- Maintains flexible hours consistent with clients leisure needs (Saturdays or Sundays, may be required)
- Contributes directly to the continuum of rehabilitation therapeutic services in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team
- Follows the hospital’s philosophy regarding client and family-centred care
- Provides a safe and age appropriate ‘fun’ atmosphere that fosters the development of leisure
- Adheres to and ensures the maintenance of the Standards of Practice as outlined by Therapeutic Recreation Ontario
- Identifies personal and professional learning needs and establishes goals
- Identifies practice issues and participates in their resolution
- Remains current with professional literature related to Therapeutic Recreation & Best Practice Evidence
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
Qualifications
- Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation from a recognized Canadian College
- Maintains current certificate in Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Life Saving Course (BCLS) and Standard First Aid
- R-TRO designation
- Experience working with children and adolescents with physical disabilities and their families is preferred
- Experience planning and facilitating group recreational programs is essential
- Proven ability to relate well to professionals, children, adolescents and family members
- Ability to manage flexible working hours and fluctuating responsibilities
- Proven ability to organize time, meet deadlines, and work independently
- Ability to provide recreation programs that are safe, quality driven and engaging for clients
- Must be available to work weekends
- Previous experience working with volunteers and students
