The River Institute is looking for two summer students to work as Research Assistant /Educator.

The River Institute non-profit, charitable organization that undertakes research, education, and community outreach to protect and conserve the St. Lawrence River and other freshwater ecosystems.

We offer a great team environment and energetic staff. In 2019, the River Institute was awarded the national award for excellence in science education programming by the Natural Sciences and Research Council of Canada.

Details:

  • Hours: 35 hours per week
  • Full-time: Summer contract for 14 weeks depending on funding.
  • Anticipated start date: May 1, 2025
  • Hourly wage: Range $18.00 and $20.50 per hour
  • Reporting: Reports to Research Scientist, Program Leader Education

Job Description

The position will support environmental research and education programs at the St. Lawrence River Institute. Work may be under adverse conditions (heavy rain, hot weather etc.), and work outside typical 8 am to 4 pm weekday hours will be required.

Tasks and responsibilities will include:

  1. Perform biological sampling in the field or laboratory.
  2. Assist with environmental research and conservation projects including those related to bat conservation, habitat restoration, and cutlip minnow conservation; Pragmatics removal
  3. Maintain accurate field notes;
  4. Conduct data entry and analysis using appropriate software programs;
  5. Assist with the development and delivery education programs, including summer day-camps;
  6. Deliver educations activities in a variety of formats;
  7. Advise supervisor of situations requiring attention and follow River Institute Health and Safety procedures;
  8. Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate is someone currently enrolled in an advanced college diploma or university degree in biology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Proficient naturalist or taxonomy skills (especially insect identification) or willingness to learn is essential.
  • A high level of computer literacy, broad knowledge of software programs for word-processing, spreadsheets and statistical treatment of data is an asset.
  • Good communication abilities and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are essential.
  • The candidate must be willing to work irregular hours including nights and some weekends.
