Holly's Haven Wildlife Rescue (HHWR) is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to rescue and rehabilitate local wildlife. We take calls from the public regarding orphaned, sick, and injured wild animals. We provide education and advice, and where appropriate, admit animals for rehabilitation and eventual release back into the wild. During the Spring and Summer, the majority of our admissions are orphaned raccoons, squirrels and cottontails.

We're accepting applications for Animal Care Interns to work at our Dunrobin admissions centre for the upcoming season, thanks to funding from the Canada Summer jobs program.

Starting it the last week of April, positions are expected to be for a minimum of 8 consecutive weeks, full time (30 to 40 hours per week). Hourly wage to be determined based on experience.

ELIGIBILITY

In order to be eligible under the Canada Summer Jobs program, you must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible participants.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Animal care interns are responsible for contributing to HHWR's care of wild animals, including:

  • admitting and assessing the status of new animals
  • actively monitoring patient progress, including maintaining accurate charts
  • preparing and feeding species-appropriate formulas and foods
  • fostering natural behaviours through the provision of enrichment items and activities, and maintaining a low stress environment for all patients
  • under supervision, providing treatment for sick/injured animals including the administration of prescribed medication
  • cleaning and disinfecting enclosures and equipment to prevent the spread of pathogens
  • working cooperatively with the Director of Operations, shift supervisors, volunteers and fellow interns, recognizing limitations and asking for assistance and guidance as needed
  • maintaining HHWR's reputation by professional interaction with the public, By-law officers, and other stakeholders

QUALIFICATIONS

Animal Care Interns at HHWR must:

  • have reliable access to transportation (There is no public transport to the centre. However, In some cases, living accommodation might be available on site.)
  • have an up-to-date Tetanus vaccination
  • have experience caring for animals (preference may be given to applicants with wildlife rehabilitation experience)
  • feel comfortable entering enclosures that contain adolescent raccoons and skunks to provide daily care
  • be able to communicate fluently in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • be good problem solvers and able to keep calm but functional during animal emergencies

While not required, pre-exposure vaccination for rabies is recommended.
