JOB SUMMARY
The head cook is responsible for providing meals for campers and staff during the summer camp program. They are responsible for preparing meals for special diets, ordering food, and cleaning/organizing the kitchen and appliances. In addition, head cooks are responsible for general cleaning and maintaining meal records.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage all aspects of food service for the camp
- Supervise and coordinate the kitchen staff, providing training and coaching
- Prepare meal plans for the upcoming week
- Ensure cleanliness of food preparation and delivery areas
- Follow health department regulations pertaining to safe food practice
- Responsible for rotating stock when new orders are checked in
- Places food orders in accordance with budget and in a timely manner
- Check in all food/supply orders
- Prepares all meals on time as scheduled or assigned by the summer camp director
- Prevent food allergies and food-related diseases, and the ingredients that may cause the allergy/disease
- Be willing and prepared to meet special food requirements for both campers and staff, e.g., gluten-free and vegetarian diets
- Complete monthly food inventory by the end of each month
- Have menus posted daily
- Sanitize kitchen surfaces regularly throughout the day
- Report any accidents or injuries to the Summer Camp Director
- Assist in weekly deep cleaning of specific areas in the kitchen, e.g., floors, vent hoods, etc.
- All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completes Scouts Canada screening process including a clear Police Records Check, with Vulnerable sector check and all required training by the date provided by the Camp Director.
- Minimum two years of successful previous experience, including cooking and serving large groups
- Ability to manage kitchen staff and to modify meals for special dietary needs
- Knowledge of generally accepted well-balanced nutrition guidelines, ordering and meal planning
- Current First Aid/CPR and Safe Serve certifications
- Excellent working skills including communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to details
- Ability to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury)

- Capacity to lift and carry heavy objects
- Work in extreme heat

- Sit, stoop, kneel, crouch
- Work with chemicals and surrounded by noise.
