Five Counties Children’s Centre (FCCC) has been dedicated to supporting children and youth with physical, developmental and communications needs for nearly five decades. In partnership with families and communities, we provide outpatient and community-based services with the aim of enriching the independence and wellness of those we serve ~ Building Abilities for Life.

We assess and treat clients from infancy to their late teens, offering a wide variety of services including physiotherapy, occupational therapy speech and language therapy, social work and therapeutic recreation. We provide treatment in schools, in the community and at our locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg, Campbellford and Minden.

FCCC is proud of the partnerships we have developed within the community. These partnerships have assisted families in our communities to access additional services that are needed to assist with their child’s development.

About the Job:

We are accepting applications for a permanent Communicative Disorders Assistant in our Cobourg location.

In this position, you will provide a variety of centre-based, school-based and/or purchased rehabilitation services under the supervision of a speech language pathologist, according to operational need. You will provide services in accordance with the F-Words principles, family centered care and parent engagement and prepare therapy materials as required or requested by individual clinicians. You will have the opportunity to participate as a member of the speech discipline, clinical multidisciplinary team and resource committees to promote quality service for children. You will provide consultation, training and/or education to clients, their caregivers and schools and other agencies under supervision of staff speech language pathologists.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Execute home programs, parent coaching, group and individual treatment plans with clients referred for intervention with a Communicative Disorder Assistant (CDA).
  • Execute programs both in person and virtually according to Centre policies and procedures including privacy, confidentiality and consent.
  • Maintain documentation records, according to Centre guidelines, ensuring communication regarding treatment goals/plan/progress with the primary therapist.
  • Participate in running parent training programs, including parent only and parent-child sessions which may include videotaping and follow up.
  • Maintain knowledge of current practices and augmentative communication (AAC) strategies/technology in the field of communication assistive disorders, including but not limited to the use of AAC strategies and both high and low tech devices (displays, Got Talk and Lamp, Hanen, Gestalt).
  • Organize and maintain the department's test and materials cupboards, filing cabinets and equipment supplies.
  • Comply with relevant Centre statistical, clinical and administrative reporting requirements in a timely manner.
  • Assist in data collection for the Preschool Speech and Language Program - Healthy Child Development - Integrated Services for Children Information System (HCD-ISCIS).

What You Bring:

  • Post graduate diploma in Communicative Disorders Assistant from an accredited College.
  • Experience working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including use of augmentative communication strategies and devices is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability in communication, organizational skills and problem solving.
  • Committed to work within a family-centred approach.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and with other professionals or partners.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all information pertinent to the children and families served by the Centre.
  • Access to reliable transportation to travel to all Centre locations and to schools.
  • Must be willing to work some evenings and Saturdays, as required.
  • Updated immunizations including COVID-19 (two doses).
  • Clear vulnerable sector check.
