Mulberry Waldorf School is seeking a part-time Grade 3/4 Games and Grades 5 to 8 Physical Education Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year (July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026).
SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Games and Physical Education Teacher works out of Mulberry Waldorf School’s Vision and Mission and within our Governance Structure (https://www.mulberrywaldorfschool.ca/about-mulberry.html). The Games and Physical Education Teacher works closely with other teachers, office staff, and school leadership to develop and deliver an exemplary Waldorf educational program and maintain a positive learning environment. Summer professional development, as assigned by the Human Resources Committee, planning, curriculum development, and classroom set-up are expected. Ideally, the Games and Physical Education Teacher will spend time observing classes before the end of the 2024-2025 school year.
Physical Education in Waldorf Schools is fundamentally different than in mainstream schools. In Grades 3 and 4, physical education is taught through various games to help develop spatial awareness. Physical activity, incorporating both gross and fine motor activity, is emphasized through games using imagery, story, rhythm and imitation. The games program teaches the students to play with each other before they play against each other, to acknowledge each other, to play safely, and to gain an appreciation for all kinds of movement.
In Grades 5 to 8, students start learning about the principles of specific games and the mechanics of team sports, with an emphasis on true sportsmanship. Team sports like soccer, volleyball, and basketball, and their associated skills, are introduced in the physical education curriculum. We work with other independent and French Catholic schools in Kingston to organize tournaments and meets to give our students the experience training and competing together. All students play on the teams, and get equal playing time at tournaments. Our goal is to develop skills for a lifetime of physical activity, abiding appreciation for the outdoors, and striving to joyfully meet and overcome life’s challenges.
