Scope of the Position:

The Music Teacher works out of Mulberry Waldorf School’s Vision and Mission and within our Governance Structure (https://www.mulberrywaldorfschool.ca/about-mulberry.html). The Music Teacher works closely with other teachers, office staff, and school leadership to develop and deliver an exemplary Waldorf educational program and maintain a positive learning environment. Summer professional development, as assigned by the Human Resources Committee, planning, curriculum development, and classroom set-up are expected.

At MWS, musical education begins from the earliest years with singing as a natural joyful expression of life. Students’ daily experience of music through singing also continues to develop as young children mature through simple songs to rounds, and then to part-singing. Formal music instruction, as a special subject, begins in Grade 1 (taught by class teacher) with recorder playing, singing, games, and movement. In the middle grades, children begin to learn to read music, develop music appreciation, and learn about the theoretical and historical fundamentals of music as an art. During the fourth and fifth grades (taught by a specialty teacher), students take up ukulele. Our music classes include music theory, vocal technique, choral singing, and instrumental music learning.

  • Waldorf Teaching Certificate and/or B.Ed. degree and/or Music Teacher certification and/or equivalent music teaching experience
  • Proficiency with music theory, singing and vocal technique, and ukulele; other music skills are an asset, such proficiency with multiple instruments, songwriting, conducting

  • Demonstrated ability to create a warm and supportive environment
  • Experience and confidence with positive behaviour management
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with children, colleagues and parents

  • Follow the Confidentiality and Conduct Agreement

  • Communicate regularly with class parents

Compensation:

This is a 27% position (6 music periods of 40 minutes each) with a salary of approximately $12,700 and would be increased slightly by a multiplier for qualifications and teaching experience. The school supports professional development and offers health allowances, mentoring, and tuition remission for staff children.
