Personal Support Worker - Stephen Reed Home Care

Goal & Purpose

The position involves providing some weekend support and respite starting with 12 hour shifts for a non-verbal 47-year-old smart and gentle man with autism, in his own home. He is very intelligent, kind, sensitive and aware of people’s emotions. He is always a pleasure to be around and loves to be involved in the community. His behaviours are minimal and not aggressive.

Duties

• Drive and support him with volunteer work and various community activities (volunteering, swimming, library, coffee shops, hockey games, the park etc.)
• Prepare and cook his meals
• Light house duties
• Assist in all of his personal care (example: showering)
• Administering all medications and completing proper paperwork

• He likes to participate and make his own decisions as he is capable
• Making him feel important and getting him excited about things in his life
• Encouraging him to participate in all activities and ADL’s (activities of daily living)
• Recognizing his intelligence and speaking to him like you would to anyone else and willing to learn his communication system

• Willing to build a good rapport with him
• Experience working with people with special needs is necessary

Qualifications

• G Licence
• Vulnerable Sector Check
• Have experience working with Autism
• Have post-secondary education (Behavioural Science, Developmental Service Worker, Personal Support Worker, RPN or similar)

Pay Hourly: $26 - $28 depending on experience

Hours Available: This position is for weekend coverage, consisting of 12-hour shifts between Friday at 8am and Monday at 8am.
