Camp Winston Foundation is a charity that offers summer programs, respite programs, and year-round support for youth with a variety of neurobiological abilities and their families/caregivers. Our programs support youth living with Autism, Tourette's, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, OCD, Anxiety and ODD. With an increasing number of children diagnosed with neurobiological disorders, demand for Camp Winston’s programs and services is rapidly growing. The importance of the Camp Winston experience for our youth and their families is now more crucial than ever. We believe in a future where neurodiversity is understood, valued, accepted, and, most of all, celebrated.

The Camp Counsellor is part of a trained team that ensures the well-being of campers. The responsibilities include supervising campers at all times, overseeing good nutrition and personal hygiene practices, modelling collaborative problem solving and demonstrating positive behaviour in social situations. The Camp Counsellor is a responsible and dependable adult who is anticipatory, empathetic and practical. They must be available and willing to step into situations on request, and be a positive, constructive part of an integrated team for the duration of the contract period.

What will you do:

  • Care for campers ages 7-17 in a designated cabin group.
  • Counsellors will at all times be positive, will create an emotionally safe environment, will plan and set kids up for success and will teach life skills.
  • Supporting campers to have good hygiene by supervising and/or assisting with:
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing or bathing once per day (hair and body)
  • Feminine hygiene (if necessary)
  • Toileting (as necessary)
  • Emergency camper laundry
  • Managing a cabin’s welfare, safety and security by promoting a safe environment and responding to crisis using trained CPI Non-Violent Crisis Intervention techniques (provided free of cost during regularly scheduled training).
  • Using collaborative problem solving to maximize a camper’s engagement with the program and participate in programs with enthusiasm.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Enjoy working outdoors in a summer camp environment
  • Two years of experience working at a camp
  • Ability to deliver person-centred care
  • First Aid & CPR Certified - St.John’s Ambulance & Canadian Red Cross
  • Enjoys working with Children and Teen’s and has an interest in Child/Teen Development
  • Willingness to obtain CPI training (provided by Camp Winston)
  • Willingness to abide by Public Health recommendations and standards
  • Willingness to provide vaccination records in accordance with Muskoka-Simcoe Public Health policies
  • Satisfactory police record and vulnerable sector check
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to resolve conflict and work with a variety of personalities
  • Collaborative problem solver
  • Ability to work offline with limited access to wifi
