Job Description
The John Howard Society of Kingston & District is recruiting professional and motivated Support Workers for the upcoming supportive cabins initiative. The right candidates will join a highly motivated team with a track-record of very high achievement and an appetite for change and innovation. We currently have 2 vacancies on a relief basis up to March 31, 2026. The hours for these positions will vary based on organizational requirements and there is no guarantee of hours. Individuals seeking employment on an on-call basis are invited to apply. This position works days, evenings and overnights including weekends and holidays.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure all residents comply with the rules of residency
- Provide emergency assistance to new clients arriving to the site
- Manage any problems brought forward by staff and residents and provide conflict resolution techniques to disarm the situation
- Assist with design and implementation of on-site and community-based programming for program participants in areas such as mental health, substance use, employment, education, recreation and more.
- Liaise with the other agencies and groups, attend community meetings and events relating to housing, criminal justice, mental health, etc.
- Work with the team to address any problems or conflicts that may arise
- Monitor resident’s conditions and reports breaches to Program Manager
Skills and Abilities
- Organizational and interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Respect for professional boundaries and confidentiality
- Ability to function as a member of a team
- Computer skills, e.g. Microsoft office, internet, email
- Ability to motivate and give direction to residents
- Flexibility
Education and Experience
- College diploma in the social sciences field
- Work related experience in corrections, residential housing programs, homelessness and mental health and addiction
- Experience with conflict resolution, motivational and counselling techniques
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office suite, databases and the internet
- Familiar with community resources and services
- A satisfactory Criminal Police Check, with Vulnerable Sector
- Required to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays
