Temporary Social Services Worker

Job Purpose:

Reporting directly to the School Principal and Mental Health Lead, the Social Service Worker performs duties such as creating, implementing, and monitoring service plans in collaboration with the in-school team to support the emotional/mental health needs of students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Investigate emotional/mental health related concerns referred through in-school teams.
• Collate relevant assessment information specific to student strengths and needs from various sources (e.g. psycho-social interviews, classroom observations, etc.) and collaborate with the in-school team to develop plans for students, to address social-emotional needs.
• Work collaboratively with the in-school team to design, implement, and monitor students on established service plans including referrals with consent to community agencies or medical clinics.
• Collaborate with school staff to plan and implement clinical, therapeutic or mental health programs in the school and/or classroom to address the social-emotional needs and well-being of students.
• Offer clinical crisis intervention and support to students, staff and families.
• Provide support to students with mild to moderate mental health and addictions, and those whose clinical presentation is appropriate for service within a school setting.
• Provide input into IEP and Safety Plan development and provide Therapeutic Crisis Intervention support upon request.
• Support the Mental Health Lead in the selection and implementation of mental health promotion and prevention programming strategies.
• Provide tiers 1, 2, and 3 support in schools utilizing skills to implement and facilitate the delivery of mental health awareness and literacy programming.
• Support families to access community programs and services related to student needs (e.g. attending meetings, working collaboratively with community agencies such as Children’s Mental Health Services (CMHS) and Children’s Aid Society (CAS), Public Health, and Mental Health and Addictions Nurse).
• Respond to tragic events such as a death of staff/student and suicide. Under the direction of the Supervisor, or Mental Health Lead, debrief staff on the critical incident and provide support to families, staff and students.
• Use Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) intervention in response to suicidal risk, assess and under the direction of the Supervisor or Mental Health Lead, implement appropriate next steps.
• Under the direction of the Supervisor or Mental Health Lead, check in with students who are on referral, and/or being discharged from care (e.g. e.g. Kingston Health Science hospitals, adolescent outpatient programs).
• In consultation with the Supervisor or Mental Health Lead, provide professional learning sessions to board employees and personnel from community agencies upon request.
• Compile and maintain ongoing records, documents and statistics related to referrals.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Mental Health Lead.

Qualifications:

• Minimum post-secondary completion of a Social Services Worker Diploma, or other related post-secondary education program, and registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers in good standing.
• Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience working with children and youth and applying the three tiers of mental health interventions.
• Demonstrated communication skills, with clinical skills in assessment, planning and crisis intervention.
• Familiarity with mental health promotion, prevention, intervention services and social-emotional programming, within a tiered system.
• Experience with implementing evidence based therapeutic mental health programs to address the social-emotional needs of students.
• Knowledge and training in ASIST or other suicide intervention stratgies, and crisis intervention support.
• Knowledge of local community resources and services.
• Demonstrated experience building supportive, respectful and safe relationships, as well as experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Background check.
