The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Network (FABN) is seeking a passionate and experienced individual who will lead our summer Nature Camp. Our day camp runs at four locations (Elgin, Lyndhurst, Brockville, and Lansdowne) in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Region with teams of Environmental Educators delivering programming at each site.

The Nature Camp Director will oversee summer camps at these four locations and provide hands-on management of camp staff and programming. The successful candidate will provide leadership and mentoring to staff and volunteers, ensuring engaging programming while managing risk. This role reports to the Executive Director. The successful candidate must reside within reasonable proximity to the Frontenac Arch Biosphere and its four camp locations.

What will you do:

  • Act as an effective spokesperson and champion for Nature Camp in the community
  • On-board camp staff and deliver staff training before the start of the camp season
  • Work collaboratively with the Camp Administrator to oversee registration and payments, and troubleshoot, as needed
  • Oversee the preparation and wrap up/clean up of all four camp locations (with the help of the summer staff team)
  • Oversee the ordering and distribution of camp t-shirts and staff gear, with support provided by the Camp Coordinator and Administrator
  • Effectively troubleshoot and resolve camp registration issues, waitlists and change requests, with support from the Camp Administrator and Camp Coordinator
  • Provide direct, hands-on supervision and mentoring of on-site camp staff ● Provide on-site supervision and management at four summer camp locations, with approximately one visit per week per site
  • Conduct on-going and responsive risk management at all camp locations
  • Act as the main contact for camp families with support from the Camp Coordinator
  • With support from the Camp Coordinator, manage weekly visits of guest camp facilitators
  • Ensure accurate and timely communication of registration and attendance updates occurs to on-site camp staff
  • Work with the Camp Coordinator to ensure camp supplies are provided to each camp location, when needed
  • Appropriately and effectively address and resolve camp concerns and/or issues 
  • Ensure proper tracking and management of incident reports
  • Use already established tools (such as Salesforce) to manage camp data and survey camp families (Google forms) in order to evaluate the success of the season
  • Ensure camp programming is inclusive and accessible
  • Ensure programming is aligned with FABN’s mission and values
  • Maintain productive and successful partnerships with local camp partners
  • Ensure Nature Camp follows all applicable rules and regulations
  • Work closely and collaboratively with FABN’s Executive Director
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience and Skills

  • Post-secondary education or the equivalent
  • Prior experience working in camps and/or children’s programming
  • Experience mentoring and supervising others
  • Demonstrated good judgment and strong decision making skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage time effectively and progress multiple tasks simultaneously

Other Requirements

  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Screening (valid within the last six months)
  • Valid AED First Aid and standard CPR-C training
  • Valid G driver’s license and reliable means of transportation to and from camp locations
  • Willingness and ability to work beyond set camp hours, on evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Experience in a leadership position at a camp will be considered a strong asset
  • Ontario College of Teachers Certification or equivalent such as Outdoor Education training will be considered an asset
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, PayPal, Mailchimp, Canva, and Salesforce will be considered assets
