This role is an integral part of service delivery for residents and visitors of Loyalist Township. Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator, the Specialty Aquatics Instructor I is responsible for providing a safe aquatic environment and delivering high quality instruction in Lifesaving Society advanced programs (Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and Emergency First Aid).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide a fun and safe aquatic environment for patrons.
  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service.
  • Enforce pool rules and policies in a polite and professional manner.
  • Instruct and/or examine Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Emergency First Aid courses.
  • Evaluate the program participants based on course requirements.
  • Set up any needed equipment before classes start and clean up equipment from the deck when the lessons are done. Report any broken or damaged equipment to the Aquatics Coordinator
  • Complete administrative tasks such as updating class rosters, worksheets, recording class attendance, as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies according to NL standards including reporting all incidents and completion of forms.
  • Work as part of a team, communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and patrons in all situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

*Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • National Lifeguard Award (NL).
  • *Standard First Aid with CPR “C” (minimum) from WSIB recognized certifying body.
  • *Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor
  • *Lifesaving Society Emergency First Aid Instructor
  • *Lifesaving Society Examiner - Bronze
  •  High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD).
  • *Qualifications must be kept current.
  • Please note: a combination of these certifications is acceptable

Experience

  • Experience working within the aquatic field.
  • Previous customer service experience

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Knowledge of the principles of physical skill acquisition
  • Strong judgment skills in evaluation and decision making
  • Ability to strictly follow curriculum as laid out by the Lifesaving Society or other governing body
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Exhibit outstanding public relations skills in all interactions
  • Highly self-motivated and able to work independently in a team environment with a demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to take initiative and complete work in a detail oriented and timely manner.
  • Ability to make quick decisions
  • Ability to command authority when providing direction to patrons
  • Ability to instruct candidates of all ages
  • Ability to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Other Requirements
  • Reliable transportation
  • Obtain and maintain satisfactory vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check (CPIC).

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Internal-Other aquatics staff, Facility Operators, other recreation team members.
  • External-Community groups, clubs, patrons and members of the public.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Indoor pool environment
  • Exposure to noise (patrons, whistles)
  • Exposure to chemicals used in the pool
  • Heat & humidity of pool environment
  • Must be able to stand/walk on pool desk for prolonged periods
  • Constant visual awareness of surroundings.

Lift Weight: must be able to bring an unconscious person from the bottom of the pool to the surface/edge and remove a person from the pool (50+kgs); Carrying equipment (<50kgs)
