Canadian Hearing Services (CHS) has an opening for an Intervenor role based in Kingston. Reporting to the Manager, Deafblind Intervening Services, the Intervenor will act as a communicator and sighted guide for individuals with a combined loss of hearing and sight, providing access to information and facilitating interaction with their environment and surroundings.

Additional responsibilities include assisting with daily tasks, transporting and accompanying clients to and from assignments and/or appointments, and providing support regarding assistive devices and community resources.

This is a permanent, full-time unionized position, working Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This posting is due to department expansion.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Direct Client Support

  • Facilitate communication using methods such as ASL, Signing Exact English (SEE), tactile communication, finger spelling, Braille, large print, and gestures based on individual preferences
  • Act as a sighted guide and accompany clients to daily activities, employment, social events, and medical appointments
  • Assist with daily living tasks such as making phone calls, shopping, and accessing media
  • Provide environmental information to support awareness and independence
  • Support self-advocacy and advocate on behalf of clients when needed
  • Provide guidance on assistive devices and community resources
  • Transport or accompany clients to and from appointments

2. Administrative Duties

  • Coordinate and schedule service requests
  • Maintain accurate client records, reports, and service data
  • Update databases and documentation
  • Communicate with clients, referral sources, and funding bodies
  • Support individualized service planning

3. Community Education & Outreach

  • Deliver presentations and workshops about Intervenor services
  • Promote awareness of Deafblindness and accessibility
  • Engage with Deaf, Deafblind, and hearing communities
  • Participate in community events and campaigns
  • 4. Professional Development
  • Attend training, workshops, and staff meetings
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation and best practices
  • Continuously develop ASL and communication skills

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Deafblind Services or equivalent (e.g., PSW, Social Service Worker) and/or 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Experience working with individuals who are Deafblind
  • Strong communication skills, including proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Knowledge of various communication methods (e.g., SEE, tactile signing, haptics, Braille, hand-over-hand techniques)
  • Valid Class G driver's license with a clean driver's abstract
  • Access to a reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance (for client transportation)
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain
  • Ability to travel locally and occasionally out of town

Additional Skills & Competencies:

  • Understanding of health, mental health, and aging in Deafblind populations
  • Knowledge of orientation and mobility strategies
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work in diverse environments
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required
  • French/LSQ is considered an asset
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs
