This role is an integral part of service delivery for residents and visitors of Loyalist Township.
Reporting to the Recreation Coordinator, Group Fitness Instructors will facilitate various group fitness programs for adults and older adults within Loyalist Township. Group Fitness Instructors design and teach specific types of group fitness classes and programs based on their training and experience.
The delivery of these programs plays a key role in building a strong community as part of the Corporate Strategic Plan by strengthening and promoting quality of life, health and wellbeing.
The successful candidate will be available to work Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings (starting at 9:00 am), with availability to teach mornings/evenings including weekends. This is a part-time opportunity, up to 10 hours a week.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide a fun and safe environment for patrons.
- Demonstrate exceptional customer service.
- Enforce recreation rules and policies in a polite and professional manner.
- Plan and instruct engaging group fitness classes that:
- Are effective; provide coaching, feedback and modifications, cueing and encouragement.
- Improve technique; supervise and ensure the safety of patrons enrolled in registered or drop-in group fitness.
- Provide classes that are progressive, challenging and can adapt to the diverse needs of participants.
- Setup any needed equipment before classes start ensuring all equipment is in good working order. Clean up equipment when sessions are completed ensuring program space is clean and safe for the next program. Report any equipment malfunctions or safety issues to Supervisor.
- Develop positive and professional relationships with participants. Communicate in a positive, productive and professional manner.
- Take responsibility for the maintenance and cleanliness of program areas.
- Responsible to take attendance and fill out incident/accident forms when required.
- Participate in staff training including emergency procedures and response training.
- Work as part of a team, communicate effectively with staff, volunteers and participants in all situations.
*Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Current Group Fitness Certification from Can Fit Pro, Ontario Fitness Council, or of equal merit.
- Standard First Aid; CPR-C Certification.
- Specialty fitness certification like Yoga, Zumba, Essentrics (certification appropriate to the specific class the instructor is teaching).
Experience
- Experience teaching group fitness classes, coaching teams and individuals, small group training, or personal training.
Knowledge, Skill & Ability
- Candidates must be reliable, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable in the field of fitness and wellness and have strong leadership skills.
- Ability to work as a cooperative member of a team.
- Ability to manage difficult situations and manage conflicts in a calm and professional manner.
- Passionate about providing exceptional customer service experiences.
- Highly self motivated and able to work independently in a team environment with a demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Ability to take initiative and complete work in a detail oriented and timely manner.
- Ability to effectively multi-task
- Ability to make quick decisions
- Ability to command authority when providing direction to participants
- Ability to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Reliable transportation
- Obtain and maintain satisfactory vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check (CPIC).
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Regular communication with Recreation and Municipal Staff
External: Daily interactions with Township residents and visitors
