The Café Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the student-owned and operated on-campus café. This role combines leadership, customer service, staff supervision, and operational management to ensure the cafe provides a welcoming, inclusive, and efficient environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
The Café Manager plays a key role in supporting student employment and fostering a positive campus community while maintaining high standards of service, food safety, and financial accountability.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day café operations, including opening and closing procedures
- Maintain a high level of service standards across staff members
- Oversee recipe accuracy and consistency among staff
- Process daily cashouts and weekly submissions to the President of operations leadership team
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and compliance with health and safety regulations
- Monitor café equipment daily and coordinate maintenance or repairs as needed
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Human Resources & Payroll, reviewing and submitting bi-weekly timesheets and ensure monthly health and safety checklist are submitted
- Ensure daily logs are completed and filed appropriately
- Work closely with HR on hiring, onboarding, staff concerns, and policy implementation
- Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to support café promotions, social media campaigns, events, and outreach initiatives
- Recruit, train, supervise, and support student staff
- Effectively delegate responsibilities and maximize resources
- Create and manage employee time-off requests and schedules
- Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative team environment
- Complete end of semester performance evaluations, while providing coaching, feedback, and any ongoing staff development
- Ensure a high standard of customer service and hospitality
- Address customer concerns and resolve issues professionally; Knowing when to report to campus security and President’s leadership team
- Promote an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all members of the campus and local community
- Monitor inventory levels and place supply orders as needed
- Track sales, expenses, and daily cash handling procedures
- Accurately code daily invoices and end of day cash deposits
- Assist President with budgeting, reporting, and cost control initiatives
- Support efforts to improve operational efficiency and sustainability
- Develop and maintain strong external relationships with partners, vendors, and local community
- Collaborate with the Student Association, student groups, and campus departments
- Conduct annual reviews of policies and implementation
- All other duties as reasonably assigned by the President
Skills & Qualifications:
- Previous experience in the food service industry, retail, or café operations preferred
- Completion of a college or other program related to culinary arts, hospitality or food and beverage service management is considered an asset
- Food handler’s certification is required
- Leadership or supervisory experience is required
- Ability to work in a fast paced and team-oriented environment
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Precise attention to detail, order, and cleanliness
- Demonstrate reliability, initiative, and problem-solving skills
Working Conditions:
- Required vacation during any St. Lawrence College closures, winter break between mid-December and January
- May be required to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed
- Ability to walk or stand for long periods of time and occasionally may lift heavy objects (50lbs)
Job Requirements:
- Must be available to work full-time 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday.
- Available to work evenings/weekends if needed.
- Experience working within the industry and management experience.
