Fisheries Conservation Specialist - Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters

The Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters Foundation (OFAH Foundation) is seeking an Atlantic Salmon Project Specialist to support the delivery and growth of the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program (LOASRP).

Reporting to the LOASRP Coordinator, this position is responsible for developing, planning, coordinating, and delivering habitat restoration, education, volunteer engagement, and stewardship initiatives that contribute to the restoration of Atlantic Salmon in Lake Ontario. The successful candidate will work closely with government agencies, community partners, educators, volunteers, landowners, and stakeholders to advance conservation outcomes while promoting public awareness and engagement.

• Job Length: September 28, 2026 - August 27, 2027
• Job Term: 1 full-time seasonal contract 35 hours per week
• Salary: $25.11-$28.25 per hour + 4% vacation pay

What You’ll Be Doing:

Habitat Restoration & Conservation Projects:

• Develop, coordinate, and deliver habitat restoration and stewardship projects that support the goals of the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program
• Work with partners to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate habitat restoration initiatives.
• Coordinate volunteer restoration activities involving schools, community groups, and conservation partners.
• Support project planning, data collection, monitoring, and reporting requirements.
• Collaborate with government agencies, conservation organizations, municipalities, and landowners to achieve project objectives.

Education, Outreach & Engagement:

• Develop and deliver in-person and virtual education programs for students, educators, and community groups.
• Coordinate and deliver all aspects of the Classroom Hatchery Program for students in Grades 1–12.
• Build and maintain relationships with teachers, anglers, volunteers, landowners, and conservation partners.
• Represent OFAH Foundation at trade shows, community events, stakeholder meetings, presentations, and media opportunities.
• Support program communications through social media, websites, educational materials, signage, displays, and public awareness initiatives.

Program Administration, Partnerships & Team Leadership:

•  Support project planning, budgeting, expense tracking, funding opportunities, and reporting activities.
• Participate in partner working groups and help strengthen relationships with key stakeholders and sponsors.
• Assist with recruiting, training, mentoring, and supporting seasonal employees, Conservation Interns, volunteers, and placement students.
• Provide leadership and guidance while fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive team environment.
• Support work planning, program growth, and continuous improvement initiatives that advance the long-term success of the LOASRP.

What We’re Looking For:

Education:

Post-secondary education in:

• Fish & Wildlife
• Biology
• Ecology
• Environmental Science
• Natural Resources Management
• Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered

Skills & Experience:

You bring:

• Minimum of three years of fisheries, wildlife, aquatic or outdoor education experience with the public, children, and volunteers
• Knowledge of terrestrial and aquatic ecology
• Knowledge and experience with reforestation, naturalization, aquatic/wetland restoration
• Experience coordinating projects and managing multiple priorities
• Strong understanding of and adherence to safety protocols
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills
• Strong organizational, time management, problem-solving and multi-tasking abilities
• Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office)
• Ability to work both independently and in a team

Assets (nice to have):

• Fisheries restoration or hatchery operations experience
• Hydraulic and geotechnical engineering experience
• Experience working with aquaria and video equipment
• Volunteer recruitment or coordination experience
• Personal interest in fishing and conservation

Work Environment & Requirements:

This role includes both office, field, and event-based work. You should be comfortable with:

• Working outdoors in all weather (heat, cold, rain, snow)
• Standing, walking, and working outdoors for extended periods
• Regular travel throughout Ontario, including extended day travel
• Some evening and weekend work, particularly during peak program delivery periods
• Lifting 50–100 lbs with assistance

You must have or be able to obtain:

• Valid Class G driver’s licence
• Clean driver’s abstract
• Advanced first aid with level A CPR & AED (as a minimum)
• OFAH membership (required at time of hire)
• Criminal record check (required every three years)
