Blockkin is a Canadian HR compliance platform. Every employer in Canada has to train its people on workplace harassment, WHMIS, health and safety, and accessibility, under fourteen different provincial, territorial and federal regimes. Blockkin attaches the legal requirement to each employee'swork location, delivers the right training in the right language, and reassigns it automatically when a certificate expires. The platform is going live this fall with five beta customers. Next up is hrFox, an AI assistant that answers employers' HR and compliance questions grounded in the law that actually applies to their sites, in English and Quebec French.
You will be among the first developer hires at an early-stage company, working directly with the founder and two senior engineers who review your work. The job is roughly two-thirds engineering and one-third product. You will ship code to a live product used by real employers, and you will learn the product well enough to demo it and run customer feedback sessions.
This is a learning role with real responsibility. Nothing you build goes to production without review, and you will get direct feedback from senior developers every week.
Role Details:
- Junior Full-Stack Developer
- Company: Blockkin LTD · Brockville, Ontario · blockkin.com
- Location: Remote (Ontario). One in-person working day per week in Kingston with the founder.
- Reports to: Jay Sexton, Founder & CEO (technical founder) Works with: Fractional CTO and
- Fractional Senior Developer; HR and compliance lead
- Compensation: $26/hour
- Start: October 2026
What you will do:
Engineering (about 65%)
- Pick up tickets in Jira assigned by the Senior Developer: bug fixes, front-end components, API endpoints, database migrations, test coverage.
- Take part in the platform clean-up and security review led by the Fractional CTO: read the codebase, document what you find, write up decisions, and implement agreed fixes.
- Write and run QA: manual test plans for new features, regression checks before releases, and automated tests where the Senior Developer directs.
- Build and test bilingual course content in the platform: load modules, verify EN/FR rendering, check audio and video, log defects.
- Use AI coding tools (Claude) as part of daily work, with review, and help define how the team uses them safely.
- Keep documentation current: setup guides, runbooks, architecture notes, decision log.
Product and customer (about 35%)
- Attend planning meetings with the founder, CTO and Senior Developer. Take notes, capture decisions and open questions, and turn them into Jira tickets.
- Learn the product end to end. Full-time hire: run a complete demo for a prospective customer by month three.
- Help set up and facilitate user feedback sessions with beta customers: schedule, prepare scripts, observe, take notes, summarize findings.
- Reproduce and triage customer-reported issues.
- Contribute to the hrFox evaluation work: help build and check the question sets used to test whether the AI assistant answers correctly.
First six months
- Month 1: Onboard. Local environment running, first tickets merged, sit in on the security review kickoff, learn the domain (what WHMIS, OHSA, AODA and the Quebec regimes actually require).
- Months 2–3: Own a stream of tickets from the clean-up backlog. Run QA on each release. First customer feedback session as note-taker. First internal demo.
- Months 4–6: Deliver a feature end to end with review. Run a customer demo with the founder present. Co-own the release QA checklist. Contribute to hrFox evaluation datasets.
What we are looking for:
Required
- Graduate of a computer programming, software development or related postsecondary program (St. Lawrence College Computer Programming and Analysis is a strong fit).
- Working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and at least one web framework; comfortable with SQL and Git.
- Understanding of testing and QA fundamentals.
- Clear written communication. You will write tickets, notes and documentation every day.
- Curiosity about how the product is used, not only how it is built.
- Legally entitled to work in Ontario; able to travel to Kingston for one in-person day per week.
Nice to have:
- French (spoken or written). Our product is bilingual and Quebec is a core market.
- Experience with React/Next.js, Postgres or Supabase.
- Experience with AI-assisted development (Claude, Copilot, Cursor) or building on LLM APIs.
- Any exposure to HR, payroll or workplace compliance in Canada, from coursework or a previous job.
- Experience presenting, demoing software, or running user testing sessions.
Working arrangements
- Remote by default. One day a week the founder works in Kingston alongside you (location to be confirmed).
- Weekly 1:1 with the founder; weekly code review with the Senior Developer; CTO sessions during the security review.
- Jira, GitHub, Slack, Google Workspace.
- Because the platform handles employee data, you will sign a confidentiality agreement and complete our security onboarding. Production access is role-scoped and granted progressively.
Hiring process
Résumé screen, a 30-minute conversation with the founder, a short practical exercise (a small bug fix or feature in a sample repo, done on your own time, under two hours), and a final conversation with the CTO.
We aim to decide within two weeks of first contact.
How to apply:
Send a résumé and a short note about something you have built to hello@blockkin.com. A GitHub link is welcome but not required.
Blockkin LTD is an equal opportunity employer. Accommodations are available on request throughout the recruitment process.
