ReStart is a program of the John Howard Society of Kingston and District. We provide a wide range of employment counselling services to help people prepare for, find and keep employment. 

POSITION: Resources & Information - Employment Consultant 

LOCATION: 900 Montreal Street, Kingston, Ontario. 

STATUS: Contract 12 months Full/time 

SALARY: Starting at $44,761 


1. Coordinating the day-to-day operations of the Resource and Information Services. Ensuring smooth and seamless service delivery, working in conjunction with Intake and Reception staff

2. Reception of the general public, drop-in and scheduled clients (in-person and telephone)

3. Provide clients with orientation to our Resource & Information Services

4. Promote all components of our employment services, assisted and unassisted

5. Assist clients with accessing and utilizing the resources in RIS

6. Provide information and support to clients on job search techniques, current labour market trends and community resources

7. Assist clients with computer usage and provide basic computer literacy instruction

8. Maintain appropriate statistical information and reporting procedures as required

9. Maintain and organize the RIS materials and general office supplies, ensure they are replenished, current and relevant

10. Assist clients in developing, updating and editing their job search materials (resumes, cover letters, etc)

11. Complete needs assessment and determine appropriate course of action, including making referrals to ES Consultants or the Job Developer for further services

12. Search internet job sites daily, maintain job board, and keep current on local job market

13. Promote and provide information on all Employment Ontario services and assist clients in accessing those services

14. Facilitate various job search workshops, information sessions and job fairs.

15. Execute scheduled follow-ups with clients as required

16. Ensure services delivered are within the Employment Ontario guidelines and within the policies and procedures of John Howard Society

17. Communicate with team and supervisory staff on a consistent basis all information pertinent to the effective and efficient delivery of services

18. All other duties as required


  • A degree or diploma in the social sciences field. Work experience in an employment services environment may off-set academic standing. Specific education, training or certification in employment counselling is an asset
  • Previous experience working with clients who have high/complex needs and/or have multiple barriers to employment
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite, databases and internet
  • Excellent communication skills, professional boundaries, customer service skills and ability to respect confidentiality
  • A satisfactory Criminal Police Check
