Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Marketing and Digital Accessibility Coordinator is responsible for supporting the execution of the integrated marketing and communication strategy and the digital accessibility plan for Kingston WritersFest.

Our Organization

Kingston WritersFest is a five-day readers' and writers' festival featuring more than 60 top Canadian and international authors in 45+events – readings, onstage conversations, performances, and Writers Retreat master classes for emerging and established writers.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing

  • Assists with digital communications, including direct mail, presentations, video and photo assets, photo/video library maintenance, and digital graphics;
  • Uses community outreach to ensure website events, stories, and promotions are current and accurate;
  • Monitors social media activities to identify opportunities to engage on key issues.
  • Responds to enquiries, providing exceptional customer service;
  • Copy edits and reviews print and digital promotional materials for fulfillment of sponsor and donor logo/print obligations;
  • Distributes promotional materials locally and via mail-outs;
  • Supports KWF staff in promotional events, including Festival launch and sponsor and donor appreciation;
  • Monitors and collects online and print publications with editorial or mentions of KWF, sample festival materials, ads, and other mentions of the festival (event calendars, blogs, tourism sites, author websites, etc.) to create annual archive binder and creates report for post mortem; and
  • Other duties as required by Director of Marketing.

Content Creation and Digital Accessibility

  • Creates content that supports brand identity, visual design, and style guidelines;
  • In collaboration with the creative team, researches and assists in development of a strategic plan that addresses the accessibility of digital content;
  • Creates, edits, and implements written and visual content for digital media, website, newsletters, and social media platforms that is compliant with current accessibility best practices;
  • Implements the accessibility plan for all digital content, including working with the graphic designer and digital management director on writing alt-text for images, captioning video, screening posts for accessibility standards in font size, contrast, and colour; and
  • Other duties as required by Artistic Director.

Eligibility/Experience

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, and applicants to this role must:

  • be no older than 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The ideal candidate will be a university or college student enrolled in communications, marketing, or a related discipline (such as English or history), and will have:

  • Knowledge of and experience with platforms and software: Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress, Hootsuite, MailChimp, Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok;
  • Experience creating social media content, specifically video editing;
  • Interest and understanding of digital marketing fundamentals;
  • Experience in accessibility policy and best practices, especially for the arts and non-profit sectors;
  • Developed interpersonal communication skills, including writing/editing;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work effectively;
  • Understanding of professionalism, initiative, and independence in the workplace;
  • Creative, resourceful, and results-oriented;
  • Excellent story-creation, writing, and editing skills; and
  • Fluency in English.

Work Environment

This is a hybrid remote position with weekly in-person meetings. The Kingston WritersFest office is located at Seaway Coworking in downtown Kingston. The building is accessible with a ramp from the street and an elevator to each floor. Public parking is available adjacent to the building.
