Join our dynamic team in a challenging and critical role! Located in a maximum security and correctional treatment centre, we are looking for a dedicated individual to take on the responsibilities of general maintenance, repairs, and various skilled trades tasks. As part of the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional Treatment Centre team, you'll play an important role in the maintenance and upkeep of our facility. Your skills will be put to the test as you provide expert trades services, general maintenance, and compliance with safety regulations.
Please note: This position supervises inmate helpers - Salary note for Custodial Responsibility Allowance (K-7) applies.

In this role, you will:
- Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain heating, ventilation, fire systems, and associated electromechanical devices
- Check, test and repair air conditioning, boiler and refrigeration systems
- Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain various pumps, burners, water softeners, kitchen items, grounds equipment
- Operate and maintain tubular steel furniture, water tanks, power plant equipment, security screens, steel structures, security and non-security locks
- Performing emergency repairs in the absence of other maintenance staff and assist plumber and electrician
- Complete and maintain appropriate logs/records
- Supervise inmate helpers and report conduct
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
- You are certified in one of the skilled trades as recognized by the Ontario Government.
- You have a current First Aid and Heartsaver certificate or the ability to obtain these upon hire.
- You have advanced knowledge of at least one recognized skilled trade, and a working knowledge of other skilled (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, welding, brick laying) and semi-skilled trades.
- You can perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks (e.g. painting, carpentry, welding, lock repair and HVAC maintenance).
- You can operate and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning and fire systems, as well as instrumentation and control systems.
- You can review information on automated systems and perform quality assurance checks.
- You can interpret, organize and complete blueprints, schematics, specification diagrams and drawings.
Legislative knowledge:
- You can interpret and apply relevant legislation, municipal by-laws and codes, and provincial building codes.
- You have the ability to obtain and apply correctional facility security requirements (i.e., lockouts, tagouts and elevated work procedures).
- You have knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and institutional security practices and procedures to recognize workplace hazards and security breaches, and ensure prompt corrective action.
- You have knowledge of environmental waste management regulations for garbage and hazardous waste.
Communication and interpersonal skills:
- You can discuss work projects with other trades people, liaise with correctional staff, and ensure work in completed in a timely manner.
- You can complete reports on assigned projects and maintain accurate logs.
- You can provide instructions in the safe use of power equipment and hand tools.
- You can access information on warranty and service agreements to prepare reports, and respond to inquiries.
Computer skills:
- You are proficient with computer applications and computer systems for monitoring automated systems (e.g., mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls and fence security monitors, closed circuit TV, etc.).
