People from across Canada and around the world come to learn, teach, and conduct research at Queen’s University. Heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) mechanics in the Facilities team support their success by ensuring that heating and cooling equipment serving teaching, research and general building comfort cooling is operating as required. Trades staff like our HVAC Mechanics play an important role as ambassadors for the university. Their daily contact with students, faculty, staff and visitors helps the university to be a welcoming and friendly place.

Facilities is now hiring one (1) full-time continuing HVAC Mechanic to join the Maintenance Team. Reporting to the Manager, Refrigeration and Small Boiler Systems, the HVAC Mechanic will install, maintain, repair and overhaul refrigeration and air conditioning systems, small boilers and combined heating, cooling and ventilation systems.

This position is a full-time continuing appointment, working 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate must be willing to work overtime and respond to call-ins outside normal working hours as required. In addition, this position falls under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 229 (Collective Agreement 2021- June 30, 2024).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its applicable regulations as well as adhering to Queen’s and Facilities Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Respect diversity and promote inclusion in the workplace.
  • Perform required maintenance and preventive maintenance program including, but not limited to, the installation, repair and overhauling of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, boilers, and combined heating ventilation and cooling systems; record keeping, corrective action, and ordering of all applicable supplies to maintain all systems.
  • Operate various portable electric and manual hand tools and maintain Facilities area workshop tools in good working condition.
  • Work on scheduled shift and overtime when required.
  • Document your work and manage workflow through the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Work with Stores staff to obtain and document required parts and supplies.
  • Be accountable for timely and effective completion of assigned tasks.
  • Provide peer training and apprenticeship mentorship as applicable.
  • Be a positive team member who recognizes the value of diversity in the workplace.

Qualifications:

  • 313A (Industrial) Certificate of Qualification as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic with the Ontario College of Trades, preferred.
  • Candidates with Skilled Trades Ontario proof of advanced apprenticeship standing in the 313A Certificate of Qualification as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic program may be considered.
  • Gas Technician G2 or G1 required.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and be insurable under the university’s insurance plan.
  • Several years of relevant trade experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable municipal and provincial codes and regulations.
  • Skill in the safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Sound knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with the trade and of the necessary safety precautions. Ability to follow safe working procedures in accordance with applicable safety policy, procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to work within the operational and safety policies and procedures of Facilities.
  • Ability to work in a respectful way with others in the workplace.
  • Ability to effectively carry out tasks of the trade in an effectively and timely way.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and efficiently with other trades and university staff and students.
  • Ability to learn and use required software systems such as the computerized maintenance management system, email, and the university’s Human Resources MyHR.
  • Ability to learn and use a two-way radio system effectively.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the job.
  • The successful candidates will be required to produce a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen as a condition of employment.
