The Residential Support Worker will provide person-centred supports to individuals with a developmental disability, physical disability, challenging behaviours and/or a dual diagnosis in all residential locations. The Residential Support Worker will work directly with individuals in helping set goals and making healthy life choices. The Residential Support Worker will work closely with the supervisor, the team, and individuals to lead, observe, plan and implement, programs and activities that promote learning and development in daily living, social and life skills. The Residential Support Worker contributes to the safe and smooth operations of the residence.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Reflect and interpret the agency’s Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Service Principles in your work with enthusiasm and commitment.
- Understand and promote the rights and responsibilities of the individuals. Empower and treat all individuals with respect and dignity.
- Work independently or within a team to prioritize and complete shift requirements while still meeting the individual’s needs.
- Provide support to individuals by carrying out duties and following their support plans, considering their choices, needs, and actively involving them.
- Identify social, economic, recreational, physical, vocational, and educational services in the community that will meet the individual’s needs. Provide support guidance and instruction to facilitate participation.
- Participate in assessment, goal setting, and program planning for the individual.
- Perform delegated tasks as directed by professionals, such as administering medications, and completing range of motion according to medical professional’s instructions within established agency Policies and Procedures and Individual Support Plans.
- Provide support in areas of personal hygiene while maintaining the individual’s dignity and respect.
- Follow through with the individual’s prescribed dietary needs. Prepare meals following the outlined meal plan.
- Perform general household cleaning duties.
- Attend and actively participate in meetings, such as staff meetings, Individual Support Plan meetings, etc.
- Ensure any items purchased are documented and receipts are attached.
- Ensure all incidents are documented and reported to the on-call supervisor.
- Participate in professional training opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skill.
- Follow all ICSS guidelines, Policies and Procedures.
- Follow all relevant Health and Safety Policies and Procedures. Understand your role and take responsibility in maintaining a safe workplace and reducing workplace injuries.
- Participate in the orientation and training of new staff, volunteers and students.
- Ensure accuracy, confidentiality and safekeeping of agency records.
- Ensure completion of administrative work.
- Develop and maintain respectful and positive cooperative working relationships to contribute to the integrated, seamless delivery of services from ICSS, including individuals, staff, families, etc.
- Inform supervisor and team of any pertinent information regarding appointments, programs, activities, etc.
- Follow agency lines of communication. Remain current and informed of agency and location-specific information.
- Ensure communication is respectful, objective and unbiased.
Skills/Knowledge/Experience Required
- DSW, PSW, or relevant education and experience in the field.
- Experience with individualized plans.
- Ability to organize, plan, and prioritize work with minimal supervision
- Ability to set priorities to manage time within deadlines.
- Ability to follow direction and work as a member of a team.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and support new and unacquainted individuals with minimal information.
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, procedures and strategies to promote effective safety within the workplace.
- Ability to problem solve and make decisions accordingly.
- Attention to detail and ability to complete task thoroughly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Conditions of Employment
- Possess a valid driver’s licence.
- Possess a driver’s abstract with less than four minor convictions and no serious convictions.
- Possess valid vehicle insurance.
- Access to personal vehicles for work purposes.
- Must provide a clean Vulnerable Sector Police Check.
- Must provide a valid First Aid/CPR Level C certificate.
- Must provide a letter of good health and documentation indicating all up-to-date applicable immunizations.
- Must work flexible hours.
- Must be reliable and responsible.
- Must successfully complete all applicable training.
